Former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu on Monday night said President Goodluck Jonathan insulted the Southwest with his statement that the region be rescued from the hands of ‘rascals’.
"I think the President is wrong because that is an insult to our parents. It is a speech from a drunk sailor fisherman whose boat is about to capsize. That is an insult to our parents; you don’t come to this land, seek our votes and then insult our parents that they raised ‘rascals,’ the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) national leader said.
He spoke at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Ikeja, Lagos on his way to Abuja for today’s launch of ACN’s campaign with a colloquium.
Tinubu described ACN as the party to beat in the April elections because it is ideology-driven with populist programmes and policies.
He denied that there was a rift between him and ACN presidential candidate Nuhu Ribadu over the choice of running mate.
He said it was time to vote out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 12 years in power without anything to show for it.
Tinubu said: "We are winning. You cannot win it all but we are winning the majority and we are taking over from PDP, the Poverty Development Party."
On his alleged rift with Ribadu, he said: "It cannot be true," describing the report as "Isi ewu reporting."
He said: "The ACN is the only platform that is bringing a vision, a developmental programme, the manifesto that is putting the people first and articulating the policy that will remake Nigeria. The country needs a remaking.
"Now, we are 50 years and above and every time every year, they discuss potentials, discuss expectations. The hope of Nigerians should not be dashed by a party that has been in power for the past 12 years and making promises, unfulfilled promises, fake and empty promises. There are over 20 million unemployed Nigerian graduates; year after year you run a deficit budget. What is the ratio of the capital and recurrent expenditure that are set aside for developmental projects; what are those values that Nigerians are benefiting from this shattered umbrella and shattered hope?
On World Bank Managing Director Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as possible running mate to Ribadu, Tinubu said: " She is a very qualified individual. She is an asset to the nation, an asset to Africa and the international community. There is no doubt about that. But you don’t know whether she is even free now. We have so much to gain from her, intellectually."
As culled from the Nation
