Robery incident

Just a day after a Divisional Police Officer, CSP Joseph Oluwatomokun, was killed in Lagos, it was payback time as men of the Lagos State Police Command in the early hour sof Monday killed seven robbery suspects.

PUNCH METRO gathered that a Corporal, identified simply as Adeyemi was also shot by the suspects and he is now receiving treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.

Incidentally, the seven suspects were killed in the same area where two policemen, Insp. Raginald Ikeji, and Corporal Kehinde Yusuf, were killed on Friday night at a pin-down point by suspected armed robbers.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, DSP Samuel Jinadu, said the suspects had engaged the police in a fierce gun battle before they fell to the superior fire power of the policemen.

He said, “On 25th April, 2011, about 12:30 am, based on a very reliable information, the State Anti-Robbery Squad detectives engaged a notorious gang of armed robbers at Challenge Bus Stop, Mushin.

“In a gun battle that ensued between the police and the armed robbers, a police corporal was shot in the abdomen and is being operated upon now, while seven of the armed robbers who came in a Honda Accord Academy car (AE457KSB) fell to the superior fire power of the police and three of them escaped on standby motorcycles.

“Items recovered include: One AK-47 rifle with five magazines loaded with 85 rounds of live ammunition, one Beretta pistol with 14 rounds of live ammunition, one pump action gun with 33 live cartridges, two locally-made pistols as well as the Honda Accord Academy Car they came in. Meanwhile, the wounded police corporal is receiving treatment in the hospital and investigation is still ongoing.”

A policeman, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the suspects were too many in the car and as a result, they could not conveniently resist the fire power of the police.

He said, “Two sat in front while five sat at the back. Mushin has become a very volatile area and the police will continue to carry out routine patrols there in order to reduce crime,” adding that, “the murder of DPO Oluwatomokun was a slap on our face and we will stop at nothing to apprehend the suspects.”

Jinadu said that the remains of the DPO were still at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where an autopsy was being done, adding that police were combing the Alakuko area and carrying out undercover operations in order to apprehend the perpetrators.

“Effective policing is being intensified by the police. The police are intensifying patrols in the areas of ‘stop and search’, vehicular patrol as well as foot patrol is also in the area. The operation proved that the patrols are yielding positive results and Lagos State police will continue to intensify operations to make sure that people can sleep with their two eyes closed,” he added.

A source told our correspondent that a wife of one of the suspects killed by the police and another suspect had been arrested and were was being interrogated.

When our correspondent asked how the lady was arrested, the source said the police checked the suspect’s phone and called the last number he dialed and the receiver identified herself as the wife of the owner of the phone.

“So, the policeman told her that he was a doctor and that her husband was involved in an accident. She was told to come to a particular location where she would be picked and taken to where her husband was being treated. She came to the location as was arranged and she was arrested,” the source said.
