INEC To Name Four RECs For Imo Gubernatorial Rerun.

Ballot Box
Four resident electoral commissioners have been recruited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to administer the crucial rerun elections in Imo State on Friday May 6 2001.

The rerun election was decided at a meeting headed by Prof. Attahiru Jega on Friday as the INEC  determined what needed to be done to avert a constitutional crisis in the state where unscrupulous INEC officials connived with the incumbent governor, Ikedi Ohakim, to declare the state gubernatorial elections held on April 26 2011 "inconclusive" even though it was out rightly won by the APGA candidate, Rochas Okorocha.

INEC has contacted for state RECs to conduct a "credible election rerun" but Naija News Desk sources said two of the RECs recruited have a troubled history of electoral fraud and could not be trusted to deliver on the hope  and expectations of the people Imo who are aspiring to end the tragic leadership of Mr. Ohakim in the state via last Friday's election.

As Naija News Desk already revealed, Nigeria's president, Goodluck Jonathan weighed in at the last minute to ensure rerun in four local government areas and one ward in the state to provide Ohakim a better chance at winning the rerun especially in Oguta where Senator Arthur Nzeribe hails from.

Already, voters in the state have condemned the inclusion of  Humprey Nwaghene, formerly  the REC at Delta who had declared Emmanuel Uduaghan as the governor in 2007, an election that was later upturned by an appeal tribunal. Mr. Nwaghene is currently the REC in Ebonyi. Also troubling is the inclusion of Hon. Ikoiwak Aniebe  the REC of Rivers state who is to manage the process, election analysts told Naija News Desk that Mr. Aniebe has poor electoral records and could not be trusted to midwife a free and fair rerun in Imo state.

Other officials contacted to conduct the rerun includes Mike Ighini, current REC of Cross Rivers state and Austin Okogie of Abia state.
