Gunmen suspected to be of Boko Haram Islamist sect yesterday attacked the Damaturu Satellite Prison, killed a prisoner and set free 40 other inmates.
The attackers who were said to have stormed the prison premises along Gashua Road in the early hours of yesterday, shot sporadically in the air, killing a prisoner and injuring some other prison personnel.
Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patrick Egbuniwe, confirmed the incident. He said, “there was a jailbreak in the early hours of this morning (yesterday) which was assisted by some armed gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram sect. The armed gunmen freed 40 prisoners, killed one prisoner and one prison warder was injured in the process.
“Our men arrived at the scene and fought to retrieve some prisoners and arrest the attackers but at the moment, no prisoner is retrieved nor any arrest made. Some of the gunmen were killed but their members took their bodies away,” he disclosed.
The commissioner said a combined team of the police and army were on the trail of the attackers. Residents also said a private school around the Pawari area of the metropolis was burnt.
The yesterday attack on the Damaturu Satellite Prison was the second time gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members would attack prison facilities in Yobe State, the first being an attack on Damagum Satellite Prison in Fune Local Government in March where about 14 inmates were also freed.
